The Concord hotel at the Borscht Belt of the Catskills was a world-famous destination, known for its huge resort industry from 1950s to '1970s. Located in Kiamesha Lake, Sullivan County, New York, the Concord was the largest resort in the region before closing in 1998. There was a dining room of a capacity of 3000 and it had over 1,500 guest rooms too.The resort covered an area of 2000 acres.
In 1936, a Russian Immigrant Arthur Winarick acquired the Kiamesha Property. In 1939,he incorporated the property.
On March, 16, 2000 the plans for a $500 million redevelopment were revealed. When completed, this will be one of the most significant development efforts taken by New York. The new luxury hotel is to be designed by Hillier Group and will be built in an architectural style similar to the traditional mountain lodge. It will replace the old Concord hotel. The proposal for a total reconstruction to create a new four-star, world class hotel and conference center is suggested. An all year-round resort and residential community is also proposed.
The overall plan is being designed by William B. Tabler and architects from New York City in coordination with Divney Tung Schwalbe which is an engineering and environmental design firm based in White Plains, New York. The site covers more than 1,600 acres of open space and the famous Golf Course too.
The key components of the reconstruction include -
• The Concord Hotel and Convention Center
• The Kiamesha Ranch/Spa
• Riding Stables
• Alternative Artist Colony
• Alpine Village
• Entertainment center
• Wilderness Park
• Golf Village
• Rental Housing
The reconstruction of Concord hotel Catskill would create up to 8,000 construction jobs and also serve as a catalyst for the resurgence of Catskill which was once a popular holiday destination.
Mr. Louis R. Cappelli, the leader of Concord Associates, LP, a mutual venture of Reckson Strategic Venture Partners and Cappelli Enterprises, endeavors to maintain the environmental integrity while reviving the Concord hotel. The beauty of the place adds to the value of this property. The plan is carefully designed keeping the environment in mind. The plans of providing internal transportation systems will minimize the need for private vehicles within the site.
